About the City

Boulogne-sur-Mer is a city in northern France, in the Pas-de-Calais. Located by the English Channel, with a city population of  44,859 inhabitants, it serves as France’s biggest fishing port and one of the country’s main connections with the United Kingdom.

            The city’s name was recorded for the first time during the Roman Empire as Bononia, a derivative of the Celtic word bona, meaning "foundation", "settlement", "citadel". This derivation is also found in the name of the Italian city of Bologna.

            It’s a city with a rich historical background, which due to its strategical placement

served as a shipping port to Britain ever since the roman times. Also it contains an artistic feel as a result of  its medieval architecture and middle age landmarks such as Château de Boulogne-sur-Mer .
